Fresh from the sea

If you follow the romantic lamps on the water’s edge at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront you arrive at a terrace with dreamy views of Table Bay and Table Mountain. While Belthazar Restaurant, Wine Bar & Grill is known as something of a theatre of fine food and wine with their “largest wine-by-the-glass bar in the world”, they also deliver with a consistent standard of excellence.

This has seen the venue snap up a TripAdvisor 2016 Certificate of Excellence, plus they’ve once again been honoured for their outstanding dedication to wine in Wine Spectator’s 2016 Restaurant Wine List Awards.

Being a seaside restaurant it’s a no-brainer that seafood is a top priority, and Belthazar imports all its prawns and langoustines from Mozambique. Extravaganzas include a Royal Seafood Platter for Two, including a whole crayfish, two large langoustines, six medium langoustines, two tiger giant prawns, 2 tiger medium prawns, two king prawns and four queen prawns – perfectly prepared and served with lemon butter, garlic butter and per-peri sauce.

The venue’s festive season delights also includes new dishes:

Goulash Soup – traditional rich beef soup

Tabbouleh Salad – trad Lebanese salad made with finely chopped parsley and mint, tomatoes, onions, bulgar wheat and lemon

Sauce Steaks 250g and 350g – grain-fed fillet, flambéed in brandy and topped with one of 8 sauces – peppercorn, choc chilli, red wine, monkey gland, mushroom, blue cheese,  béarnaise or garlic

Belthazar Premium Burger – a beef and chicken burger topped with avocado and double cheese and all the trimmings

Prawn Curry – 8 queen prawns in a traditional Northern Indian spicy tomato, cashew nut and cream sauce served with basmati rice

Steamed Fennel or Broccoli – served with a drizzle of lemon butter

Trio of Halawa – plain, chocolate and pistachio – a crystallised sesame seed delicacy

Wine is stored in a designer vinoteque

A vinoteque with sought-after rare vintages

Belthazar’s innovative nitrogen-infused wine-by-the-glass bar serves up to 250 of the Cape’s finest wines by the glass, and sommeliers advise on a wine-list of up to 600 fine wines and sought-after rare vintages. The wines are professionally stored in a designer vinoteque and served in Riedel glassware. The wine list is compiled by the Slick Restaurant Group’s André Lourens.

The venue’s new all-weather dining enclosure on the terrace was launched in October and is equipped with a mist cooling system and heaters and offers panoramic views of the Waterfront.
