On Tuesday 2 May 2023, internationally recognised and awarded cartoonist Zapiro will be in conversation with TAYO Fatunla, who is also a multiple award-winning cartoonist, editorial cartoonist, writer, author and illustrator, at The Commons in Muizenberg
TAYO (pictured left) was born in the United Kingdom and raised in Nigeria where he began his cartooning career. He graduated from the Kubert School in New Jersey, US. He is most renowned for his Our Roots series – featuring famous people in Black history. Our Roots has been a Black history cartoon column for 30 years, first published in the UK’s Voice newspaper. His idea was to focus on all Black peoples in the diaspora, things, places and events. His series has been syndicated in US newspapers including The News Sentinel, and featured in The New York Amsterdam News, Chicago Defender, Sacramento Observer and the Atlanta Voice. He participated at UNESCO’s Cartooning in Africa forum held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the Cartooning Global Forum in Paris, France.

Zapiro is known for his visual commentary that has at times been exceedingly controversial. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, he studied media arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has worked as an editorial cartoonist for a number of newspapers including South, Mail & Guardian, The Sunday Times, and currently the Daily Maverick. His work has appeared at numerous group shows and exhibitions on New York, Dhaka, Amsterdam, Sweden, and more. His caricatures also appeared on the satirical show ZANEWS. In 2019 he was awarded the Chevalier des Artes et des Lettres. He was also ranked by Jeune Afrique magazine as one of the 50 most influential personalities on the African continent.
The event starts at 7pm, the cartoonists being introduced by Tyler Pike, a fledgling cartoonist and caricaturist from TOONZA.
The Commons provides alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, great food and a relaxed ambiance. The venue is in Surfers’ Corner, Beach Road, Muizenberg, and has the most delightful balcony with views across the bay.
