The Kanna nominations for KKNK 2023 have been announced. These include seven nominations for Nicola Hanekom’s site-specific drama Mirre en aalwyn. This all comes following this year’s KKNK, which was presented in Oudtshoorn from 1 to 9 April, 2023.

Mirakel written by Reza de Wet and directed by Marthinus Basson, Droomkraan Kronieke, the physical theatre production as part of the KKNK’s Karoo Kaarte project and Ver in die wêreld Kittie, David Kramer’s new musical all received five Kanna nominations.

Die fel omstrede kroon van Edward II & Gaveston, also directed by Basson with script by Tom Lanoye, received three nominations. Three members of the company from the farce Afval, a product of the SU Drama Department’s Première Theatre Festival, were nominated for emerging artist.

Woordmusiek written and directed by Coenie de Villiers, who also compiled the music, received two nominations.

Wide variety of topics

Rafiek Mammon, convenor of the Kannapaneel, says this year’s discussions were difficult and diverse, with excellent works of outstanding quality that were seen. “That is how it should be after all. We need to have those discussions, to make the tough decisions that lead to meaningful progress. The range of works at this year’s KKNK included a wide variety of topics.”

“The diverse programme included fresh, newly written music theatre, a musical, site-specific and traditional theatre with breath-taking design, direction and performances all seen on stage in the Klein Karoo,” Mammon says.

This year’s Kannapaneel was Mammon, Diane de Beer, Ilse Klink, Felicia Lesch and Fahiem Stellenboom. Only the 27 debut productions at this year’s festival were considered for Kannas this year, except for emerging artist. The winners will be announced at the Kanna Award ceremony at Leopard’s Leap in Franschhoek on 5 May.
