THE WAITING GAME. Presented by Cape Town Theatre Company. Directed by Regina Malan. At The Masque Theatre, Muizenberg, until 2 September 2023. SHEILA CHISHOLM attended a Thursday evening show.

Jean-Georges Noverre, the legendary 18th century French dancer, choreographer and reformist wrote in his 1760 Lettres sur la danse sur les ballets (Letters on Dancing)  that, if required to continually refer to programme notes to follow stage happenings, then the work/production was defeating its objective.

The objective being, to lay out a narrative – with twists, turns, secrets and innuendoes that engages minds on a fresh, gripping and well-narrated tale.

When “melodyless” music, indistinct diction in word song, busy action, and 17 performers characters are as complex as in The Waiting Game, and there is no programme ready to hand, the evening’s performance became an unsatisfactory evening at the theatre.

On the upside, scenes were changed smoothly, excellent lighting effects, and simple choreography held audience attention.

“Set in the heart of the Muizenberg theatre community, the show is a riveting combination of heartfelt moments, action packed dance sequences and beautiful music all weaved together while taking the audience on a breathtaking journey of self-discovery, healing past traumas and simply finding the joy in everyday life. With a stellar cast of more than 17 performers and an original story set to music and dance, The Waiting Game asks those hard hitting questions we were all faced with after coming out of forced isolation and then having the want and need for human connection.”
