The Cape Town Baroque Orchestra (CTBO) presents their Summer Baroque Season of three concerts in February 2025 in various venues across Cape Town. The season includes a variety of baroque repertoire, including chamber, orchestral and vocal music, all played and sung by an exciting line-up of local and international artists.
In two repeat performances of the award-winning Variations programme (Event 1) on Saturday 1 February, the focus is on sets of variations or divisions that are built on thematic material originating from songs or hymns, performed by Lynelle Kenned (soprano), Ralitza Macheva (baroque violin) and the CTBO’s Artistic Director Erik Dippenaar (harpsichord), in the atmospheric Weltevreden chapel in Noordhoek.
In String concerti, plus a suite or two! (Event 2) on 12 February, they welcome two baroque violin soloists, Julia Wedman and Cristina Prats-Costa, from Toronto, Canada. Julia is also a member of the renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.
They will lead in a varied programme of orchestral repertoire in both the Italian and French baroque styles at our home venue, St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in De Waterkant.
The last event of the season, ‘Queens & Kings’ (Event 3) on 15 February, is a collaboration between CTBO, our regular partner Lutesong Consort, and South African-born countertenor, Clint van der Linde, in a programme of some of his favourite repertoire that also showcases the varied roles the countertenor voice served in a historical context.
In true Cape Town Baroque Orchestra style, there will be a complimentary glass of wine after each concert.
Event 1 – VARIATIONS
Saturday, 1 February, 11:00 and 13:00, Weltevreden Chapel, Noordhoek
These two performances are repeats of their award-winning Variations programme. A popular genre during the baroque period was so-called ‘sets of variations’ or ‘divisions’: Composers often wrote variations and embellishments on songs, folk melodies or hymns. Members of the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra, Ralitza Macheva (baroque violin), Erik Dippenaar (harpsichord) and Lynelle Kenned (soprano) present a programme of expressive sets of variations from the baroque, including music by Corelli, Caccini, Byrd, Philips and Handel. The programme also includes newly composed sets of variations for solo violin by Montreal-based composer and early music specialist Matthias Maute, as well as a piece by South African composer Arthur Feder.
This programme was recently awarded a kykNET Fiësta Award for best classical music production at an arts festival in South Africa in 2023, and was performed to great acclaim at the 2024 Montreal Baroque Music Festival in Canada.
Two performances will be held on 1 February to accommodate more concertgoers.
The performances will take place at the intimate and atmospheric Weltevreden chapel, originally a farmhouse dating from 1790 that was restored by local harpsichord maker William Selway (Bill) Robson. Only 40 tickets per performance available.
