The MosJazz 2019 Festival in Mossel Bay is looking good! The MosJazz line-up has an international flavour with the addition of Phil Fearon (UK), Judy Boucher (Caribbean), British saxman Andrew Young, kwassa kwassa act Afro Fiesta, and Choko (Trinidad, Tobago), who has become popular for his his reggae and soca beats.
South African talent ranges from Emo Adams, Garth Taylor, Allou April & The Ghoema Project, Virtual Jazz Reality and Ernie Smith.
Special performances include Brent Krus, a guitar virtuoso from Cape Town celebrating the music of Carlos Santana, and Karin Kortje pays tribute to her role model – Aretha Franklin.
MosJazz 2019 highlights
UK singer, songwriter and producer Phil Fearon was massive in the 80s with his band Phil Fearon and Galaxy. They had major dance hits like I can prove it, What do I Do, Everybody’s Laughing and Dancing Tight.
Judy Boucher is known for Can’t be with you Tonight – a firm party favourite in many a household. Born in St. Vincent in the Caribbean, Boucher relocated to High Wycombe, England around 1970, later joining musician brother Bruce’s band – which became Judy Jack and the Beanstalk. Judy later went solo and scored a No. 1 hit, Dreaming of A Little Island, in 1985, with the debut album Can’t Be with You Tonight following in 1987.
Born in Liverpool, and now a resident of Vienna, Andrew Young was classically trained in clarinet and sax. After completing studies in London, he moved to Germany to pursue more eclectic styles. Appearing as soloist with orchestras in Holland and Germany, he gigged alongside luminaries such as Matt Bianco and the Precious Wilson Band. In 2010 he performed with Gino Vanelli. His album Magic Life (Gold status) was recorded with producer Garo Mafya in Istanbul.
