THE HUNGRY HERBIVORE. 11 Orphan Street, City.

REVIEW: Megan Furniss

On Saturday morning I went to The Hungry Herbivore, in Orphan Street, for breakfast. It was a birthday celebration for me, well chosen because it is a pure vegan restaurant and I have recently become a vegan.

The long, skinny venue has tables running down the one side and a huge bar along the other, where things are squeezed and juiced and stirred and whipped. The decor is fresh, simple and natural, with green leafy accents and wood. Very ‘herbivore’.

Healthy and delicious vegan food
Healthy and delicious vegan food

I was very over excited. A whole, pure vegan menu, where I could eat every single thing. My friend and I both ordered the Hungry Herbivore’s breakfast (R79); vegan seitan bacon, tofu scramble, fried tomato, mushrooms and rye toast. Our kid companion, who is struggling with allergies, was beside himself because the Waffle ‘n berries(R62) are wheat and dairy free, and so he ordered that.

Before the food came I had a pure ginger shot (R15) and the others had a very fresh juice blend. Then our breakfasts arrived and we were silent except for the lip smacking. The scrambled tofu was utterly delicious, with Mexican flavours of corn and green pepper, the seitan bacon was a revelation; smoky and sweet, and very chewy and bacony. The tomato and ‘shrooms were the most ‘normal’ things on the plate, and made it feel like an old fashioned full breakfast. I loved it. My friend found the ‘bacon’ a bit too sweet. Maybe I would have too, if I had stopped for a second to consider it, but I was too busy wolfing it down.

Burgers, pizzas, breakfasts … all that good stuff

The waffle, served with berries, coconut ice cream and rich chocolate sauce, went down just as well, and we had to bribe the kid to let us taste. None was left on the plate. Yum.

I was too full for anything else, but my arm was twisted to choose a take-away slice of something sweet for later. I chose the salted caramel slice and it was utterly outrageously good.

The menu is extensive, especially for lunch and dinner. Burgers, pizzas, raw pizzas, bowls, and all day breakfasts. And there is a fridge full of their sweet treats. I am planning my next visit for very, very soon.
